Tummy Tuck

1. Purpose Of Tummy Tuck

A Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at creating a flatter and more toned abdomen. This is achieved by tightening the abdominal muscles and removing excess skin and fat from the stomach area.

2. Who Should Undergo Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck is suitable for individuals who have loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles, often as a result of pregnancy or significant weight loss. It is not recommended for those who plan to get pregnant in the near future, as subsequent weight gain and stretching can negatively impact the surgical results.

3. What Types Of Tummy Tuck Procedures Are There?

There are three main types of Tummy Tuck procedures, differentiated by the extent of the surgery and the length of the incisions:

  • Mini Tummy Tuck: Involves a shorter incision and is suitable for those with minimal excess skin and fat.

  • Standard Tummy Tuck: Includes a longer incision and addresses a more significant amount of excess skin and muscle tightening.

  • Extended Tummy Tuck: Features the longest incision, extending around the flanks, and is suitable for those with substantial excess skin and fat, often after massive weight loss.

4. Does A Tummy Tuck Leave A Scar?

Yes, a Tummy Tuck does leave a scar. The incision is typically made at the lower abdomen, where it can be easily concealed by underwear or swimwear.

5. What Is The Difference Between A Tummy Tuck And Liposuction?

While both procedures aim to improve body contour, they have different purposes:

  • Liposuction: Focuses solely on removing excess fat deposits. It does not address skin laxity or muscle tightening.

  • Tummy Tuck: Removes excess skin, tightens abdominal muscles, and can also include fat removal through liposuction. It provides a more comprehensive solution for a toned and firm abdomen.

6. What To Expect During A Tummy Tuck Procedure?

The Tummy Tuck surgery can take anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the desired results and the complexity of the procedure. The surgery is typically performed as an inpatient procedure where the patient will stay one or two nights in the hospital.

Surgical Process

  • Anesthesia: You will receive general anesthesia, which will keep you asleep throughout the procedure.

  • Incision: The surgeon will make an incision between your belly button and pubic hair line. In some cases, a second incision around the navel may be necessary to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen.

  • Muscle Repair and Fat Removal: Through these incisions, the surgeon will repair and suture weakened abdominal muscles, remove excess fat, and trim away excess skin.

  • Result: The outcome will be a flatter and firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight.
